What Is Kratom and What Is It Used For?

What is Kratom?

Mitragyna speciosa (commonly known as kratom) is a tropical evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia. It is a member of the Rubiaceae family, which means that it is genetically related to coffee!

Kratom trees are indigenous to Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Papua New Guinea; where Kratom has been used in traditional medicines for hundreds of years. It is usually prepared as raw powdered foliage, tea, or in capsule form.

Users of kratom have reported that it has both sedative and stimulating properties, which can vary with the amount and genetic variety used.

The main varieties or “strains” of Kratom are red vein, green vein, and white vein, referring to the color of the central vein on the underside of the leaf.

Users often report that red vein varieties are associated with Kratom’s more sedative effects, while the green and white varieties are associated with Kratom’s mood-boosting and energizing effects, respectively.

How is Kratom used?

Because it is a herb that is derived from tree leaves, it can be consumed in a variety of ways. When kratom was first discovered in Southeast Asia, it was harvested off the tree and chewed as fresh leaves after being stripped of their veins. In addition to using dried leaves, a more preferred technique of ingestion comprised drying the leaves and then crushing them into a powder that could be taken whole. Kratom is also widely used to make tea, which is known as kratom tea.

When people buy kratom in a commercial setting, they are most typically purchasing it in powder form. This powder can then be added to beverages as a mixer. Numerous people like to mix their kratom with citrus juice, such as orange juice, because the citrus components of the juice activate the powder and allow it to take action more quickly.

An additional popular modern way of taking kratom is referred to as the “toss and wash” approach. To consume kratom in this manner, the user takes a spoonful of the powder and places it in their mouth. They then drink some water or juice to wash it down.

Kratom can be taken in capsule form, which is even more convenient. The powdered version of the leaf is placed in capsules, and a person would typically take several of them to equal the amount of kratom they would consume if they were to drink or sift and wash the kratom powder themselves.

While these are some of the more straightforward methods of consuming kratom, there are plenty other options available. Kratom can be processed into resins, extracts, and tinctures, among other things. Some people prefer these versions of the plant because they are more strong and concentrated than other forms. Using these procedures, small amounts of the active alkaloid components of kratom are extracted, and these can then be used orally, for example, by mixing them with a drink.

Kratom tea is becoming increasingly popular in the United States as well, and it is also one of the most prevalent methods of consuming kratom in Southeast Asia, second only to chewing the fresh leaves themselves. When compared to powdered forms of kratom, the effects of tea have a tendency to be more stimulant in nature. The pain-relieving properties of the plant are thought to be diminished when the kratom-infused tea is consumed; nevertheless, the mood-boosting and euphoric effects of the herb are thought to be enhanced, particularly when the tea is consumed on an empty stomach. For those wanting the sedative effects of kratom, powdered kratom is frequently favored over capsules or tablets.

To sum up, kratom powder is a fine, loose powder that’s usually green in color, but depending on the strain, it may also be a red or orange color. People can also find capsule versions of kratom and compressed tablets, or it can be taken as a tea.
