Introducing: Delta(∆)8-THC

Bold, capitalized text reads, "Introducing: Delta 8-THC: The Science of Cannabinoids". To the right of the text is the chemical structure of Delta 8-THC and a picture of the leaves of a cannabis plant.

The Science of Cannabinoids

When you ingest cannabis, the effects that you experience are due to the interaction of chemicals – called cannabinoids – with specific, membrane-bound receptors located in the brain. These receptors make up a system known as the Endocannabinoid System (ECS), which helps to modulate many aspects of the Central Nervous System (CNS). The CNS is responsible for taking in sensory information, processing that information, and sending out the necessary motor-signals in response. That is why ingesting cannabis can create such a wide range of effects. Pain, nausea, hunger, anxiety...the signals regulating each of these functions are found in the CNS, so it makes sense that cannabis would decrease pain and nausea while increasing hunger and relaxation.

As of now, scientists have been able to isolate 113 different cannabinoids and identified two distinct types of cannabinoid receptors. You may recognize the main classes of natural cannabinoids, which include CBG, CBC, CBD, THC, CBN, CBE, iso-THC, CBL, and CBT. The effects that you experience when you ingest cannabis depend on the specific combination of cannabinoids present.

Introducing: Delta(Δ)8-THC

A recent valuable discovery in the realm of cannabinoids is Delta(Δ)8-THC. Naturally, Δ8-THC is only present in cannabis in minor amounts. However, recent advances in the process of fractional distillation have made it possible to isolate Δ8-THC from hemp extract.

The National Cancer Institute states that Δ8-THC is:

"An analogue of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) with antiemetic, anxiolytic, appetite-stimulating, analgesic, and neuroprotective properties. [Delta-8-THC] binds to the cannabinoid G-protein coupled receptor CB1, located in the central nervous system…This agent exhibits a lower psychotropic potency than [delta-9-THC], the primary form of THC found in cannabis."

The Benefits

Δ8-THC differs from Δ9-THC (the cannabinoid you are probably most familiar with) by only a few atomic bonds. However, like with other cannabinoids, that small change results in a considerable difference in how it affects you.

While Δ8-THC is less psychoactive than Δ9-THC, it still has psychoactive effects. Compared to Δ9-THC, Δ8-THC provides a slightly clearer head, while still creating a physical "stoning" effect and having pain-relieving properties.

Due to its lesser psychoactive effects, high doses of Δ8-THC are much less likely to cause anxiety when compared to Δ9-THC. In fact, many people find Δ8-THC to be quite helpful for reducing their anxiety.

Additionally, Δ8-THC is a great appetite stimulant and has anti-nausea properties. This makes it the perfect choice for those suffering from stomach ailments that can make eating difficult.
